In 2014, the Cigna team is celebrating the 20th year of their national partnership with the March of Dimes and sponsorship of March for Babies. During this time, Cigna, the Cigna Foundation and the people of Cigna have contributed nearly $28.5 million to the March of Dimes. Cigna employees have led the way through their service on local March of Dimes chapter boards.

I am deeply proud of Cigna’s partnership with the March of Dimes. What makes our work together so special is the personal investment I’ve seen our employees make in the partnership. Over the past 20 years, the team has committed time and resources to help the March of Dimes make major improvements in prenatal care and support moms in having full-term pregnancies and healthy babies.

At Cigna, we are extremely proud of our Healthy Pregnancies, Healthy Babies® program for customers, which is based on information from the March of Dimes. In fact, nearly 90 percent of Cigna customers surveyed stated the Healthy Pregnancies, Healthy Babies® program helped them take better care of their health. It’s just one way the March of Dimes and Cigna are working together to make a big difference in the lives of the tiniest babies and their families.

Recently, I was struck by new research showing that bans on smoking in public places and the workplace in North America have contributed to a 10 percent drop in premature births. This new research is definitely a first step in the right direction, but we know that there is more work to be done. We are proud to support the March of Dimes as they continue to work with policy-makers at the highest level who recognize the need to implement laws like public smoking bans that support the development of healthy mothers and their babies. Together, the March of Dimes and Cigna are working to help more babies get a healthy start in life.

Kmart, a national sponsor of March for Babies, has raised over $79 million to support the mission of the March of Dimes over the last 26 years.  Now they are going even further to help ensure babies are born healthy.  From March 28 through May 1, Kmart Pharmacy customers can obtain folic acid when they fill their prescription at their local Kmart! Additionally, over-the-counter folic acid is available as part of this promotion. Limited quantities per store are available.

About 3,000 pregnancies in the U.S. are affected with neural (brain/spinal cord) defects each year.  Up to 70% of those cases could be prevented if women consumed the proper amounts of Folic Acid before and continuing through pregnancy.  For more information on folic acid and why it is important, head on over to our News Moms Need blog.

For more details on the giveaway, you can read our press release, ask your local Kmart Pharmacist or head on over to the Kmart Pharmacy Web site.
