What an exciting day! March of Dimes supporters, including our 2013 National Ambassador Family and a crowd of more than 100 volunteer parents, babies, and children all wore March of Dimes signature purple color as they visited the NBC Today Show in Rockefeller Plaza early this morning. Al Roker, weather and feature anchor of Today, spoke to them about March for Babies, the March of Dimes number one fundraiser, which will take place in most areas of the country this coming weekend of April 27-28.

All of us at the March of Dimes were deeply touched and concerned by the explosions at the Boston Marathon on Monday – our hearts and sympathy go out to the families of those who were affected. As March for Babies events approach, we want to assure our dedicated community that the safety of your family, friends, and coworkers is our top priority and we are working closely with local law enforcement to make sure your event is safe and secure.
In the wake of this tragedy, we recognized the need to enhance security at our upcoming March for Babies events and to communicate with the public about our plans. We have contacted local law enforcement and confirmed their commitment to ensuring safety at our event. We have also updated our own emergency preparedness plans and shared this with all staff across our organization. We will also have a moment of silence at our March for Babies events to show our solidarity with the Boston Marathon victims.
We are grateful to our volunteer leaders, corporate sponsors and walkers for supporting our decision to move forward with our planned events. We thank all of you for your perseverance and dedication as we move forward with our mission. Babies still need your help and we hope you will join us as we celebrate our wish for a healthier future for our nation’s children.
It has been a very exciting day for March of Dimes National Ambassador Nina Centofanti! She is in Dallas attending pre-race festivities for tomorrow’s running of the FedEx #11 March of Dimes car at Texas Motor Speedway. Dressed like a driver herself in a special FedEx team fire suit, Nina got to introduce herself to Danica Patrick! In support of March for Babies, Nina joined FedEx in asking fans to vote for their favorite March of Dimes paint scheme. Nearly 30,000 votes were cast and the winning design for this weekend’s “FedEx No. 11” car will debut this weekend! Watch it in action Saturday on FOX at 6:30 PM CST, and see the video below of the car being wrapped for the race!
Latin recording superstar Thalia lends her voice for America’s babies! When you walk in March for Babies, you give hope to the more than half a million babies born too soon each year. The money you raise supports programs in your community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies. And it funds research to find answers to the problems that threaten our babies. We’ve been walking since 1970 and have raised an incredible $2 billion to benefit all babies.
If you haven’t already, REGISTER to walk in a March near you! You can walk with a team, create your own, or walk as an individual walker!
I had the pleasure of meeting our National Ambassador, and she is awesome! Nina Centofanti was born 9 weeks early and weighed just 2 lbs., 15 oz. Now she’s 8 and traveling the country with her family to encourage everyone to get involved in March for Babies. She stopped by my desk with her big brother and little sis to give me an autographed card with her picture and story on it. Nina was full of smiles and enthusiasm.
Her mom, Chris, is our guest blogger:
Hi everyone, it’s Chris Centofanti.
As you might know, my daughter, Nina, came into the world 9 weeks early and weighed less than 3 pounds. I’d worked as a nurse in the NICU for 14 years and had seen this experience a million times. But nothing prepared me for the moment I saw my own tiny, tiny baby. I felt so guilty for not being able to bring her to term and be delivered safely. And I worried about so many things…her lungs, her brain, infection. I’ve seen lots of babies die.
There’s no doubt that we are among the lucky families. Nina is completely healthy and astounds us every day. We never forget the fact that, were it not for decades of March of Dimes research, her story could have been very different.
Nina is a perfect example of what the March of Dimes has accomplished. It’s truly a gift for me to be able to share our story and be an advocate for premature babies. I’m grateful, humbled and honored to participate in March for Babies, and I hope you’ll register and start fundraising. It’s so important to support the work of the March of Dimes and help every baby be born healthy and as close to term as possible.
Please don’t forget to sign up and donate to March for Babies!
