Jay and his March for Babies team in Iraq

For the past eight years, Sgt. 1st Class Jay Monismith of Charlotte, North Carolina, has walked in March for Babies with his family in memory of his niece Sarah. She was born with a severe heart defect and didn’t survive.

This year, Jay’s serving in Iraq. He’s not the kind to let a war stop him from doing what feels right and so, with the precision of a military operation, he has planned his own March for Babies event on the base.

Fundraising on a military base is not allowed, but Jay’s family and friends helped spread the word at home and money started coming in to their Soldiers for Babies page. The team is still accepting donations. Sponsors also helped out by sending T-shirts and sports bottles.

Last Friday, April 16, a beautiful and hot day in Iraq, Jay and 125 other soldiers donned their March for Babies T-shirts and reported for duty at 6:30 a.m. sharp. They didn’t walk – they ran their 5-mile route! All in honor of little Sarah, their own babies and every baby born in America.

Jay and his unit are finishing their deployment in the next few weeks. We thank them for their tremendous efforts and wish them a safe journey home.
