Can We Fix It?

Posted by Linda

Yes we can! Yesterday, we kicked off March for Babies ’09 at the national office! Our “construction theme” was inspired by this Sunday’s very special edition of Extreme Makeover. It was also a wonderful excuse to wear checkered flannel.

We had a great time! Led by their team captains, departments faced off in skits and we heard some very creative, baby-inspired songs.

Things got a little emotional too, when two co-workers came up to share their stories. Mom-to-be Vicky got us all choked up talking about her “little nugget” and all those things a pregnant mom worries about – I remember all too well.

The tissues came out for real when Lori spoke about her adorable son Ethan who was born with a birth defect. It’s so powerful to hear these stories. You realize this is much more than just a job for the people who work at the March of Dimes.

If you’re walking with your company and haven’t had your kick-off yet, get involved! It’s a difficult year to raise money. But there are babies and families who are counting on us. A kick-off is the perfect way to motivate everyone. Get some friendly competition going between departments! Share your ’09 March for Babies goal with the team!

And don’t forget to let us know what you’re doing for your kick-off this year, or how it was!

I was on the kickoff committee for this “Extreme Makeover: March for Babies Edition” event, and I think of this as a true labor of love. We love creating a fun event to get our team started in March for Babies season, but it’s also a chance to hear moms tell all-too-real stories about their experiences during pregnancy or in the NICU. That’s what drives everything we do here: moms and babies.

I work here and fully understand the March of Dimes mission, but I also love doing my part as a fundraiser at this time of year. I appreciate everything my colleagues, March of Dimes chapters and outside companies are doing to help moms and babies, and once I send out my letters and e-mails, I’m always stunned and moved by the generosity of friends, family and acquaintances. It doesn’t take much effort to contact everyone, and their response is gratifying. I salute everyone doing their part, too!

We don’t usually have a kick off, but my personal kickoff went well. I have nearly raised the same amount I did last year and the year before and I have just gotten started fundraising. I expect to at least double what I have raised in the past. I am using one of the babies I cared for as an NICU nurse as my personal ambassador, with his parents permission, of course, and this has really helped my fundraising efforts.

Denise, we love people blogging about March for Babies and helping us get the word out. The March for Babies blog is a special blog run by a number of staff and volunteers of the March of Dimes. We love to hear your comments and feedback on anything you read here. And let us know, too, if you think we should be covering something we may have forget. If you want to start your own blog or dedicated March for Babies blog, there are a number of great hosting sites out there – most of them free! Thank you for walking and have fun blogging!

I am desperatly searching for ideas on how to create a unique team theme idea. I say that you guys did a “construction” theme. Cute idea! I was wondering if you might consider posting a blog asking for ideas on what others are doing for their team theme. We are working with the Kansas City chapter, and are heading up the team for our NICU and really want to shine! Any and all ideas are welcome! Keep up the great work.

Hi Stephanie. Thanks for the idea. I will get a post up about themes and open it up everyone to share themes that have worked for them.
