March for Babies in Japan

March for Babies walks are already taking place, some as far as Japan!

At Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, despite a seemingly torrential rainstorm, more than 400 airmen and their families showed up to walk in March for Babies. Together they raised a record breaking $50,000 for the March of Dimes.

This is just the second year the event is conducted at a location outside the United States. With persistence, event organizers Tracy Mueller and Kimberly Spath brought the March for Dimes event to Okinawa.

Why go through all that trouble? Brig. Gen. Matthew Molloy (pictured talking to the crowd), 18th Wing commander explains: “It’s investing in our future and that’s why this is important.”

Highlighting that importance at the event was a “Wall of Honor” that displayed photos of the many babies of service members and families the March of Dimes has helped in the past.

Some people chose to march to show their support; others had reasons that hit closer to home. “I’m a labor and delivery nurse, and I see what happens when babies are born prematurely,” Mueller said. Mueller also marches for another reason; her sister lost a child after being born at 27 weeks. Her family made their own March for Babies team, Avery’s Angels.

“It didn’t make much sense to fly back to the states to walk with them, so I decided I would donate money and walk the same day they were, but then more and more friends wanted to do it so I contacted March for Dimes to see what I needed to do,” she said.

Mueller explained that she is very thankful for the amount of support poured out for the march. “We are very grateful for people donating their time and money, and for sharing their personal stories,” she said. “We are excited about breaking this year’s record with next year’s march, and for the chance to save more babies.”

To our airmen in Japan, thank you for your service – and for helping babies!

Kieran Wittstruck, the March of Dimes 2012 National Ambassador, has been on a whirlwind tour to promote the 2012 March for Babies. Since January he and his parents have visited 17 states, and even celebrated his 6th birthday with the March of Dimes. The Wittstrucks are traveling the country this year to share their very personal story related to preterm birth, and to raise awareness of the mission of the March of Dimes.

At the ripe age of 6 Kieran has already met the CEO of United Airlines, Jeff Smisek, fed a Beluga Whale it’s dinner, sang the National Anthem on the court of a pro basketball game, and received a bear hug from President Barack Obama in the Oval Office of the White House. Despite all of the exciting opportunities he’s had, he and his parents agree that the most rewarding part of traveling the country is to share their story with those who want to support the mission of the March of Dimes.

This year Kieran will be attending March for Babies events around the country in the last weeks of April and the first weeks in May. If you see him at your walk, make sure to stop by and say hello!
