Hero For Babies!

This Thursday is Be a Hero for Babies Day. March of Dimes partner Farmers’ Insurance will challenge agents and employees to raise more than $2 million for healthy babies in a single day!

We will be sharing stories of Farmers’ Agents who are heroes for babies throughout the week and invite you to share your own.

Today’s spotlight is on Heather Gilbert, a District Recruiter for Farmers’ Insurance from Portland, Oregon.

Heather’s twin boys, Daniel and Dominik were born 13 weeks early in 1995 weighing and weighed only 2lbs 2oz. and 2lbs 3oz. In her own words:

“I had been on bed rest for over 5 weeks when my little ones arrived. I was so scared for them. The team of doctors whisked them away before I could even hear their first cry.

That evening I arrived in the NICU. After gowning up and scrubbing in I got to see them in their open isolates. I remember thinking, “oh my goodness I have baby dolls bigger than them.”

It was so hard to see my own boys hooked up to all the machines. After 5 days Dominik was able to breathe with the help of oxygen and I got to hold him for the first time. It was a moment I’ll never forget. At 10 days, I held him for the last time. He had taken a turn for the worse and the staff did all they could to keep him alive until I could reach the hospital. I remember running in and hearing Daniel screaming. Doctors and nurses were huddled around Dominik’s isolate performing CPR on his tiny little body. I yelled at them to stop, picked him up and held him close as he opened his eyes a final time and took his last breath. I took him to a private room where my parents were waiting and we said our goodbyes.

Daniel stayed in the NICU for another 3 months and I was there through every alarm, ultrasound, bottle feeding and diaper change. Then, he came home, on oxygen.
The March of Dimes is important to me because there are so many babies born early or with birth defects. These small babies did not choose this for themselves, nor can they battle for their lives alone. They need support and love from their families and from the doctors and staff that care for them in the NICU. The March of Dimes is there, too, to provide research, education, and community services that help give babies like mine a fighting chance.”

Thank you, Heather for sharing your powerful story – and thank you to all the Farmers’ agents who are heroes for babies. For more information on Be a Hero for Babies Day or to make a donation, please visit marchofdimes.com/farmers.

Today’s spotlight is on Jimmy Gary, a Farmers’ agent from Dallas, Texas.

Jimmy was born with a birth defect and, on top of that, contracted polio when he was just 6 years old. As a young boy in the 1950s, he and his mother went door to door collecting funds for March of Dimes.

In 2008, Jimmy and his agency started a March of Dimes Chili Cook Off. Through the event, he has raised more than $50,000 for the March of Dimes! Jimmy also walks in March for Babies. And every year, he’s among our top walkers. In 2009, he was the #2 walker for Fort Worth. So far this year, he’s up to $15,000!

Jimmy’s whole family gets behind the mission. His wife Margo is on the local March of Dimes board. They have lobbied at the Texas capital in Austin, and take part in Fort Worth’s March of Dimes Signature Chefs event.

Jimmy is driven to help promote research and education to improve the chances of premature babies. He always reminds friends and co-workers that long-term volunteers do not get involved to grow their personal agenda/business, but to better the people and the community.

Thank you, Jimmy – and all the Farmers’ agents who are heroes for babies! For more information on Be a Hero for Babies Day or to make a donation, please visit marchofdimes.com/farmers.
