Today’s blog post comes from Team Captain for Eta Tau Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Thomas A. Tatum. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is a March of Dimes National Service Partner, in which members raise over $250,000 annually to support our mission and educates thousands about prenatal care and prematurity. Tatum describes himself as not only a dedicated member of Alpha Phi Alpha, but also a March of Dimes Dad.
Each spring, the Men of the Akron Alumni Chapter (Eta Tau Lambda) of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. join nearly 1,700 people in the March for Babies at Akron’s Lock 3 Park. This annual event is the local March of Dimes largest fundraiser to provide support and education for families as we work together for stronger, healthier babies.
“Many of our chapter members have had a direct connection with premature births, including my family,” says Tatum. “When my son was born three (3) months early in 2006, the experience galvanized our resolve.” Tatum, his wife, Milistine, and daughter Lauren were blessed to welcome Thomas II (Tre’) in March of 2006. Tre’ spent the first 78 days of his life at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Akron Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Milistine Tatum spent six weeks in Akron General on bed-rest prior to delivery. In the 7 years after his birth, Tre’ deals with some issues, but he continues to thrive.
The men of Eta Tau Lambda Chapter employ their network to assist in fundraising and engage their Education Foundation to provide matching funds to bolster their efforts. Thomas Tatum states, “The bottom line is to simply ask…an unopened mouth does not get fed!”
Thank you, Thomas for sharing your story and providing words of wisdom about the importance of asking. Encourage your team members to continue to ask for support from friends, family, colleagues and employers. Asking for support is one of the first steps in receiving it.
An extra thanks to both Thomas and Alpha Phi Alpha for their continued support and dedication to our mission.

It has been a very exciting day for March of Dimes National Ambassador Nina Centofanti! She is in Dallas attending pre-race festivities for tomorrow’s running of the FedEx #11 March of Dimes car at Texas Motor Speedway. Dressed like a driver herself in a special FedEx team fire suit, Nina got to introduce herself to Danica Patrick! In support of March for Babies, Nina joined FedEx in asking fans to vote for their favorite March of Dimes paint scheme. Nearly 30,000 votes were cast and the winning design for this weekend’s “FedEx No. 11” car will debut this weekend! Watch it in action Saturday on FOX at 6:30 PM CST, and see the video below of the car being wrapped for the race!
I had the pleasure of meeting our National Ambassador, and she is awesome! Nina Centofanti was born 9 weeks early and weighed just 2 lbs., 15 oz. Now she’s 8 and traveling the country with her family to encourage everyone to get involved in March for Babies. She stopped by my desk with her big brother and little sis to give me an autographed card with her picture and story on it. Nina was full of smiles and enthusiasm.
Her mom, Chris, is our guest blogger:
Hi everyone, it’s Chris Centofanti.
As you might know, my daughter, Nina, came into the world 9 weeks early and weighed less than 3 pounds. I’d worked as a nurse in the NICU for 14 years and had seen this experience a million times. But nothing prepared me for the moment I saw my own tiny, tiny baby. I felt so guilty for not being able to bring her to term and be delivered safely. And I worried about so many things…her lungs, her brain, infection. I’ve seen lots of babies die.
There’s no doubt that we are among the lucky families. Nina is completely healthy and astounds us every day. We never forget the fact that, were it not for decades of March of Dimes research, her story could have been very different.
Nina is a perfect example of what the March of Dimes has accomplished. It’s truly a gift for me to be able to share our story and be an advocate for premature babies. I’m grateful, humbled and honored to participate in March for Babies, and I hope you’ll register and start fundraising. It’s so important to support the work of the March of Dimes and help every baby be born healthy and as close to term as possible.
Please don’t forget to sign up and donate to March for Babies!
We need to help babies everywhere!
Thank you, and take care,

An Ambassador Family is one who has benefited from March of Dimes research or programs, and is willing to share their personal story with members of their organization by speaking at meetings, writing emails and sharing on social media such as Facebook. Do you or someone in your organization have a personal connection to our mission? Share your own story with your members and/or encourage others to serve as the Ambassador Family and share their stories with your organization.
